What are the symptoms of Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer can present with a variety of symptoms, and it’s important to be aware of any changes or abnormalities in the breasts. Here are some common symptoms of breast cancer:

Breast Lump or Thickening. One of the most common signs of breast cancer is the presence of a lump or thickening in the breast tissue. This lump may feel hard or firm and is often painless. However, it’s important to note that not all breast lumps are cancerous, and many benign (non-cancerous) conditions can cause lumps as well.

Changes in Breast Size or Shape. Breast cancer may cause noticeable changes in the size or shape of the breast. This can include swelling, distortion, or asymmetry compared to the other breast.

Nipple Changes. Changes in the nipple can be indicative of breast cancer. These changes may include the nipple turning inward (inversion), persistent nipple pain, redness or scaling of the nipple or surrounding area, or discharge from the nipple (other than breast milk).

Skin Changes. Breast cancer can cause changes in the skin of the breast. This may manifest as dimpling or puckering of the skin, thickening or redness, or the appearance of an orange-peel texture (peau d’orange).

Breast or Nipple Pain. While breast cancer typically doesn’t cause pain, some individuals may experience discomfort or tenderness in the breast or nipple area. It’s important to pay attention to persistent or unusual pain that doesn’t go away.

Swollen Lymph Nodes. Breast cancer can sometimes cause the lymph nodes under the arm or in the neck area to become enlarged or tender. Lymph nodes are part of the body’s immune system and can indicate the spread of cancer cells.

Do note that these symptoms can also be caused by non-cancerous conditions. However, if you experience any persistent or concerning changes in your breasts, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and proper diagnosis. Early detection and timely medical intervention can significantly improve treatment outcomes for breast cancer.
