How to screen for Colorectal Cancer?
In Singapore, the Ministry of Health recommends regular colorectal cancer screening for individuals at average risk starting from the age of 50. Those with a family history of colorectal cancer or other risk factors may need to start screening at an earlier age or undergo more frequent screening.
There are several colorectal cancer screening tests available in Singapore, including:
Faecal immunochemical test (FIT). This is a non-invasive test that checks for the presence of blood in the stool, which can be a sign of colorectal cancer. The test involves collecting a small stool sample and sending it to a laboratory for analysis.
Colonoscopy. This is an invasive test that involves inserting a flexible tube with a camera on the end into the rectum and colon to look for polyps or cancer. If any polyps are found, they can be removed during the procedure.
Flexible sigmoidoscopy. This test is similar to a colonoscopy, but only examines the rectum and lower part of the colon.
CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy). This is a non-invasive test that uses imaging technology to create images of the colon that can be examined for polyps or cancer.
The choice of screening test depends on individual factors such as age, family history, and personal preference. It’s important to discuss screening options with your doctor and to follow recommended screening guidelines based on your individual risk.
